Type PoE Switch

Type PoE Switch

PoE switches come in three main types—PoE (Type 1), PoE+ (Type 2), and PoE++ (Type 3/4)—each delivering increasing power levels over Ethernet to support different devices.PoE (Type 1)PoE switches comply with the IEEE 802.3af standard, providing up to 15.4 watts per port from the switch, with powered devices (PDs) consuming up to 12.95 watts. This type is suitable for low-power devices such as VoIP phones, basic IP cameras, and sensors. PoE uses two of the four twisted pairs in Ethernet cabling to deliver power and data simultaneously, simplifying installation and reducing the need for separate power outlets .PoE+ (Type 2)PoE+ switches follow the IEEE 802.3at standard, delivering up to 30 watts per port with a voltage range of 50–57V. This higher power output supports devices that require more energy, such as PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, multi-antenna wireless access points, and alarm systems. PoE+ still uses two pairs for power but can handle more demanding devices without instability .PoE++ (Type 3 and Type 4)PoE++ switches, defined under IEEE 802.3bt, are the latest generation and provide up to 60 watts per port (Type 3) or up to 100 watts per port (Type 4). They use all four twisted pairs in the Ethernet cable to deliver higher power, making them ideal for high-performance devices like advanced surveillance cameras, Wi-Fi 6 access points, and industrial terminals. PoE++ ensures stable operation for devices that exceed the power limits of PoE+ .Choosing the Right PoE TypeWhen selecting a PoE switch, consider the power requirements of your devices and the cable type and length, as power loss can occur over long runs. For example, Cat6A cables over 100 meters may lose around 3.2 watts per port, so always allow headroom. Using a switch with insufficient power can cause devices to reboot or fail, while over-provisioning may be unnecessary and more costly .Identifying PoE SwitchesPoE switches are usually labeled with their standard (PoE, PoE+, or PoE++) and compliance with IEEE 802.3af/at/bt. Managed switches provide additional features like power monitoring, traffic segmentation, and port prioritization, while unmanaged switches simply deliver power and data . In summary, switching PoE types depends on the power needs of your network devices: use PoE for low-power devices, PoE+ for medium-power devices, and PoE++ for high-power or advanced devices to ensure stable and efficient operation.
