Making fiberglass cable trays

Making fiberglass cable trays

Building fiberglass cable trays involves selecting the right materials, cutting and drilling fiberglass safely, assembling tray sections, and installing supports according to load and spacing requirements.Materials and ToolsFiberglass cable trays (GRP/FRP) are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and non-conductive, making them ideal for chemical plants, coastal areas, and underground utilities . You will need:Fiberglass tray sections, connectors, and fittingsThreaded rods, clamps, and fastenersCircular saw with abrasive cut-off wheel or hack saw (24–32 teeth per inch)Standard twist drills or carbide-tipped drill bitsCompatible resin for sealing cut or drilled surfaces Planning and PreparationReview construction drawings to determine tray routes, layer structure, installation height, and support spacing .Conduct on-site inspections to adjust for obstacles, bends, ramps, and T-junctions.Check load capacity to ensure trays can support the intended cable weight without deformation .Inspect materials for cracks, delamination, or broken edges before installation .Cutting and DrillingCut fiberglass using a circular saw with an abrasive wheel or a fine-toothed hack saw.Drill fiberglass like hardwood using standard twist drills; seal all cut or drilled surfaces with compatible resin to prevent moisture ingress and fiber damage .Support the material firmly during cutting to avoid chipping .Assembly and SupportAssemble tray sections with splice plates, ideally placing splices at quarter-span points .Use a snug torque of 3–4 ft.-lbs. for threaded rod nuts.Support spacing should not exceed the distance between splice plates, and clamps must fully engage threaded rods for load safety .Maintain a design load safety factor of 3:1 and a maximum 2-inch gap between supported material and rod .InstallationInstall supports first, ensuring proper alignment and spacing according to NEMA FG-1 standards .Mount tray sections onto supports, securing with clamps and fasteners. For bends (90° or offsets), pre-measure and fabricate bends to match site conditions .Ensure cables are properly separated using separators if needed to reduce tangling and fire risk .Safety and MaintenanceProtect trays from heavy impacts, drops, or prolonged sun exposure during transport .Ensure all fasteners are tight and trays are level to prevent cable strain.Regularly inspect trays for damage, corrosion, or loosening of fasteners. By following these steps, you can build a durable, safe, and efficient fiberglass cable tray system suitable for a wide range of environments, from industrial plants to residential installations .
