Special optical fibers for sensors

Optical fiber sensors use light transmitted through fibers to detect physical, chemical, or biological changes, offering high sensitivity, EMI immunity, and remote monitoring capabilities.OverviewOptical fiber sensors (OFSs) are devices that utilize optical fibers either as the sensing element (intrinsic sensors) or as a signal conduit (extrinsic sensors) to measure various parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure, vibration, or chemical composition . They are highly valued for their small size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, ability to operate in harsh environments, and potential for distributed sensing over long distances .Types of Optical Fiber SensorsIntrinsic Sensors In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element. Changes in the fiber's refractive index, intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength occur in response to the measurand, allowing direct detection within the fiber . Common intrinsic architectures include:Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG): Reflect specific wavelengths that shift with strain or temperature changes.Interferometers: Mach–Zehnder, Michelson, and Sagnac interferometers detect phase changes caused by environmental variations.Scattering-based sensors: Raman and Brillouin scattering are used for distributed temperature and strain sensing over long distances .Extrinsic Sensors Extrinsic sensors use the fiber only to transmit light to and from an external sensing element. The light interacts with the measurand outside the fiber, such as in Fabry-Perot interferometers, enabling flexible placement of sensing points in industrial or chemical processes .Hybrid Sensors These combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles, where the fiber both guides light and participates in sensing, enhancing versatility and sensitivity .Working PrincipleA typical fiber optic sensor system includes a light source, optical fiber, sensing element, and detector. The measurand modulates a property of the light (intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization), which is then detected and converted into an electronic signal for analysis . Plastic fibers are lightweight and flexible, suitable for general applications, while glass fibers can withstand high temperatures and are used in precision or harsh environments .ApplicationsOptical fiber sensors are widely used across multiple domains:Structural Health Monitoring: Detecting strain, deformation, or cracks in bridges, buildings, and aircraft .Industrial Processes: Monitoring temperature, pressure, and chemical concentrations in manufacturing .Biomedical and Environmental Sensing: Measuring physiological parameters, detecting pollutants, or monitoring environmental conditions .Remote and Hazardous Environments: Suitable for high-voltage areas, flammable environments, or deep oil wells due to EMI immunity and non-conductive nature .AdvantagesHigh sensitivity and accuracyImmunity to electromagnetic interferenceCapability for remote and distributed sensingSmall size and flexibility for tight or complex spacesOperation in extreme temperatures and harsh environments Optical fiber sensors continue to evolve with AI and IoT integration, hybrid designs, and quantum sensing approaches, expanding their applications and improving performance in industrial, medical, and environmental monitoring .
