Production Steps and Methods of Optical Cables

Production Steps and Methods of Optical Cables

Optical cables are manufactured through a precise process involving preform creation, fiber drawing, coating, cabling, and protective jacketing to ensure high-speed, low-loss data transmission.1. Raw Material PreparationThe production begins with ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often derived from silicon tetrachloride (SiCl₄), which forms the core of the fiber. For enhanced light-guiding properties, germanium tetrachloride (GeCl₄) may be added to the core, while fluorine compounds can be doped into the cladding to adjust the refractive index . High purity is critical, as even trace impurities like hydroxyl ions or metals can increase signal loss .2. Preform CreationThe raw materials are transformed into a glass preform, a cylindrical rod that serves as the foundation for the fiber. Methods such as Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) or Outside Vapor Deposition (OVD) deposit ultra-pure silica particles inside a hollow tube or onto a solid rod, which are then fused into a solid glass rod . The preform typically measures several centimeters in diameter and up to two meters in length.3. Fiber DrawingThe preform is placed in a high-temperature furnace (around 1900–2000°C). The softened end of the preform is drawn into a thin fiber, usually 125 microns in diameter, under precise control to maintain uniformity . Lasers and micrometers continuously monitor the fiber diameter during this stage. The fiber is immediately coated with a protective polymer layer to enhance mechanical strength and prevent damage.4. Coating and ProtectionAfter drawing, fibers are coated with acrylate or other polymer layers to protect against environmental stress, moisture, and microbending . For outdoor cables, water-blocking gels or water-swellable materials may be added to prevent moisture ingress.5. Cabling and StrandingIndividual coated fibers are organized into tubes or ribbons. These fibers are then stranded around a central strength member, such as a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) rod, to provide tensile strength and flexibility . Ribbon configurations allow higher fiber density and easier splicing.6. JacketingThe final step involves encasing the fiber assembly in protective jackets. Materials vary depending on application: polyethylene (PE) for outdoor use, or flame-retardant and low-smoke materials for indoor installations . The jacketing ensures durability, environmental resistance, and mechanical protection.7. Quality ControlThroughout the process, fibers undergo rigorous testing for diameter uniformity, optical attenuation, tensile strength, and signal transmission performance . Advanced equipment ensures compliance with industry standards such as ITU-T G.652, guaranteeing minimal signal loss and high reliability.SummaryThe production of optical cables is a highly precise, multi-step process that transforms raw silica into robust, high-performance fibers capable of transmitting data at light speed. Each stage—from preform creation to fiber drawing, coating, cabling, and jacketing—is critical to ensure mechanical strength, optical performance, and long-term reliability in telecommunications and data networks .
