Use of optical cable reels

Use of optical cable reels

To use an optical cable reel safely and effectively, connect the cable, secure it, adjust tension, and wind or deploy it while avoiding sharp bends or twists.Step-by-Step Instructions1. Prepare the Reel and Cable Ensure the reel is on a stable surface or mounted correctly. Check that the drum, side plates, and connectors are intact and free from damage. If the reel has protective covers over the cable, leave them in place until installation to prevent damage . 2. Connect the Cable Attach the vehicle, vessel, or ground optical cable to the non-rotating connectors on the side of the reel. Then, connect the deployment cable to the drum exit port or pigtail inside the reel. Align the fibers with the slots in the drum exit cover and snap the cover into place . 3. Secure the Cable Rotate the drum 180° clockwise by hand and use a zip tie to secure the cable to the tie-down block. This prevents the cable from slipping during winding or deployment . 4. Adjust Tension If the reel has a drum brake, adjust it to the desired tension to control the speed of cable deployment and prevent over-spooling . 5. Wind or Deploy the Cable Insert the crank handle into the reel and wind the cable onto the drum. For deployment, unwind the cable carefully, maintaining smooth curves and avoiding sharp bends. Use “figure-8” loops for longer runs to prevent twisting . If the reel has a spring rewind or cable guide, follow the specific instructions for those features . 6. Handle with Care Always move the reel upright and use a shaft or spreader beam when lifting. Avoid dragging the drum on the ground or letting the flanges contact hard surfaces, as this can damage the cable . Keep sufficient space between reels when transporting with a forklift. 7. Stow the Crank Handle After winding, remove the crank handle, fold it 90°, and insert it into the square feature on the chassis side plate for safe storage . 8. Installation Precautions During installation, avoid pulling the cable over sharp edges, maintain smooth curves, and minimize mechanical pressure. LSZH sheathed cables are sensitive to cracks, so ensure the installation area is free of sharp objects and extreme temperatures are avoided . By following these steps, you can safely deploy, wind, and store optical fiber cables while minimizing the risk of damage and ensuring reliable signal performance.
