For plastic fibers, slice off a few millimeters with a sharp hobby knife, then polish using 200-grit followed by 400–600 grit sandpaper to remove rough edges and improve light transmission . Trim any excess jacket if necessary to expose the core for direct coupling.Step 2: Mount the FiberSurface installation is common for strain or mechanical sensing. Clean and abrade the surface, then apply a suitable adhesive such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10 to bond the fiber to the substrate. Allow the adhesive to cure fully, and optionally apply a protective layer like RTV silicone to shield the fiber from environmental effects . For temporary setups, double-sided tape can be used, though it is less reliable under temperature or humidity changes. For embedding in materials like concrete, fibers can be placed in grooves for shallow installation or cast directly into the material for deeper placement. Ensure proper routing to avoid sharp bends that could damage the fiber .Step 3: Connect to the Sensor or Light SourceFiber optic sensors require coupling to a light source or detector. You can use optical fiber couplers or connect the fiber directly to LEDs or sensors. Heat-shrink tubing is a simple method: slip a short length of tubing over the LED or sensor, warm it with a heat gun, and insert the fiber until it is held securely. For a stronger, more permanent connection, cement the fiber into a hole in the LED or sensor's epoxy capsule and cover with heat-shrink tubing for protection .Step 4: Ensure Strain Relief and Proper RoutingTo maintain accurate measurements, avoid sharp bends and provide strain relief at connection points. Secure the fiber along its path to prevent movement or stress that could affect readings .Step 5: Test the ConnectionAfter installation, verify that the sensor is transmitting light correctly and that the signal is stable. Adjust the fiber alignment or adhesive if necessary to optimize performance. By following these steps—preparing the fiber, mounting it securely, connecting it properly, and ensuring strain relief—you can achieve reliable and accurate fiber optic sensor measurements in various applications .
